Top > ・Low Invasive Cancer Treatment:Upconversion Nanoparticles
A photodynamic therapy is one of the cancer treatments with less burden on the patients. Visible light irradiation on photosensitizers which have been administered to cancer cells from outside the body result in generation of active oxygen to kill the target cells (shown in figure a), but it is not possible to treat large or deep cancer cells because of low transparency of visible light. Now, it is investigated to irradiate cancer cells which have been administrated upconversion nanoparticles and photosensitizers with near infrared light having high transparency (shown in figure b). Upconversion nanoparticles emit visible light by near infrared light irradiation, and photosensitizers can generate active oxygen, and then it makes possible to treat large and deep cancer cells. Our research group prepared upconversion nanoparticles and used cultivated cancer cells to confirm the effect of cancer treatment. These nanoparticles have high luminescence properties because of its high crystallinity.
